How do I find a MAC address or Host ID?

Here is how to find your MAC address or Host ID:

Windows

  1. Click Start.
  2. Type ncpa.cpl into the search box and press Enter.
  3. Right-click Local Area Connection and select Status.
  4. Click Details. The Physical Address is your MAC Address.

Macintosh

  1. Open the Apple System Profiler application in /Applications/Utilities.
  2. Look in the Network overview of the System Profile to find your Mac's Ethernet Address. For example, 8.0.2b.e6.87.59
  3. You can also use the command netstat -I en0

iPhone

  1. Tap the Home button.
  2. Tap the Settings icon.
  3. Tap General.
  4. Tap About.
  5. Scroll down to Wi-Fi Address. This is the MAC address.
  6. Tap the Home button to return to the Home screen.

Linux

  1. Type /sbin/ifconfig eth0
  2. Note the string to the right of HWaddr.
  3. Remove the colons.

Solaris
Type hostid at the command prompt.

 

For help registering your device so that it can connect to the Stanford wireless network:

  • Faculty and Staff: contact your Local Network Administrator. Be sure to include the Wi-Fi address/MAC address in your request.
  • Students living in an on-campus residence: contact your RCC.
  • Students living off campus: submit a HelpSU request.
